Julianna Renzi -- Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute

Julianna Renzi is an environmental science student minoring in marine science and Arabic. She is currently working on an Honors Thesis on saguaro ecology, on the board of the student-run non-profit Camp Wildcat, a member in the Marine Awareness and Conservation Society, and on the board of the Mortar Board National Honor Society.

This summer she applied for and was accepted to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Summer Student Fellowship (WHOI SSF).  She was drawn to the WHOI SSF because of her passion for research.  During the year she conducts ecology research with the National Phenology Network through a NASA Space Grant and last summer she conducted a marine ecology research project in French Polynesia as part of an internship.  These experiences stimulated her interest in pursing marine ecology research as a career and drove her to look for ways to continue researching over the summer.  The WHOI SSF struck her as a great way to learn new lab techniques, be mentored by an expert in her field, get exposure to a wide variety of oceanographic research through the WHOI Summer Lecture Series, learn about the MIT-WHOI graduate program, and pursue her passion for marine research. As a summer student fellow she will spend the summer working on an independent research project under the guidance of a WHOI researcher, attend a medley of talks and seminars throughout the summer, and participate in a one-day oceanographic cruise.

Casey Oswant-- Weather Bug

Casey OswantHello, my name is Casey and I am a senior at the University of Arizona. I will be graduating in May 2017 with a Bachelor's of Science in Environmental Science. I am currently enrolled in an Accelerated Master's Program through the Atmospheric Science department and I hope to be done with my Master's in May 2018. My goal is to be an operational forecaster after graduation. I spent this last summer interning for a private forecasting company called WeatherBug. It was an amazing experience. I learned a ton about the field of operational forecasting. My responsibilities ranged from writing articles for their website to practicing my forecasting skills by making mock forecasts. I even got to work a few overnight shifts which was a very eye opening experience. All in all it was a great experience that taught me a lot and validated my career choice.
