Critical Zone Science (CZS)

The Earth’s Critical Zone is the heterogeneous near surface environment where the complex interactions among rock, soil, water, air, and living organisms regulate and sustain life.  SWES has strong research programs in Critical Zone science that broadly encompass subsurface processes and ecosystem-climate interactions.  Specifically, SWES is known for its research and productivity in the areas of biogeochemistry and pedology, soil physics and subsurface hydrology, geomicrobiology, and regional meteorology and climatology.
